What's New with NCDL?
1. Check out the new look to the North Carolina Digital Library site! You'll find a few differences from the old site, including the ability to now read books within your web browser. Device specific instructions can be found under each tab.
2. Borrowing eBooks and audiobooks from the library just got a whole lot easier for users of the NOOK HD, NOOK HD+, NOOK Tablet™ and NOOK Color™. Last week, Barnes & Noble added the OverDrive Media Console app to the NOOK Apps™ storefront. This NOOK app enables users to wirelessly borrow eBooks and MP3 audiobooks from the library.
3. For the first time, the Overdrive Media Console App is available to Kindle Fire users in the Amazon App Store for Android, making it easier to access eBooks and audiobooks from OverDrive-powered libraries.
4. Adobe Digital Editions 2.0 is here!
It’s a new version of the software patrons use to read eBooks on their computers and transfer eBooks to eReaders like the NOOK.
ADE now works with screen readers for low-vision and visually impaired users. Specifically, NVDA, JAWS, and VoiceOver are compatible for menu navigation and reading books.
Activating compatible eBook readers with ADE has become real easy. You just plug in the eBook reader you want to activate, then drag the book you want to read over to the device. That’s it. The Adobe ID is automatically registered, and the book is transferred all in one step.
ADE 2.0 does have one quirk that you should know about (remember, it’s brand-spanking-new). The banners across each eBook that show how many days are left on a loan aren’t always accurate. If you check out an eBook for three weeks, it might say that there are only two weeks left for you to read it. Don’t worry, the loans will still expire at the right time, and we’ve let Adobe know what’s going on.
North Carolina Digital Library FAQs
How do I know if my device is compatible?
An up-to-date list of compatible devices can be found by clicking Help at the top of the page, then Device Resource Center.
How many items can I check out?
You can check out up to four titles at a time.
Can I renew the items I have checked out?
You may not renew items, but you may check them out again if there is no other request pending.
What happens when I place an item on hold and how many items can I place on hold at the same time?
If the book you want to read is already checked out, you can place a hold on it by selecting the 'PLACE A HOLD' link. You will be prompted to sign in (if you haven't already) and you will be asked for an email address so that you can receive notification when the book is available for you to download it. Once you receive the email notification, you will have 72 hours from the time the email was sent to log in and check the title out. After that 72 hour period, if you have not checked the title out, the book will then go to the next person on the hold list. You can place up to five titles on hold at a time.
How do I cancel a hold?
Log into your account by clicking Account at the top of the page. Click Holds to view a list of titles currently placed on hold. Click Remove next to the title you wish to cancel.
What is my Wish List?
The wish list is for titles you do not plan to checkout or reserve at this time, but would like to consider for checkout or reserving at a later time.
Can I get overdue fines on eBooks?
No, eBooks will expire on their specified dates. They can never become overdue.
Can I download directly to my Internet Ready Device?
An App is available for many devices such as the Android and iPhone/iPad that will allow you download directly to your device once you’ve created your Adobe ID.
